Meridian By Alice Walker Essays - Meridian, Literature, Alice Walker

Meridian By Alice Walker In this convincing novel by Alice Walker, Meridian, the primary character, grows up through the eyes of the peruser. The creator shows us the passionate, physical, and mental phases of obstruction that Meridian experiences during the tallness of the social equality development. Truth be told, in the event that one ganders at the life of Alice Walker, the creator of the novel, likenesses verifiably exist between the two ladies. First let us look at the early indications of obstruction in Meridian. One of the first evident instances of Meridian's singularity is the point at which she dismisses religion at a exceptionally youthful age in spite of her mom's ardent Christian convictions. In school, she can't complete a discourse since she realizes that there is no fact in the words she expresses. Meridian was attempting to disclose to her mom that for the first time she truly tuned in to what she was stating, realized she didn't accept it, and was so diverted by this disclosure that she was unable to make the remainder of her discourse. (Walker, 121) This entry uncovers the insight that overwhelms her feeling creating in Meridian. One more model is the means by which Meridian is capable to be a protester when she surrenders family life and parenthood when she has the chance to go to school. Her emotions are very much clarified in this entry. At the point when she parted with him she did as such with a light heart. She didn't think back, accepting she had spared a little individual's life. (Walker, 90-91) Albeit Meridian feels it will be best for the kid just as for herself, this choice causes extraordinary aggravation inside her due to her mom's dissatisfaction. The peruser sees Meridian enter school after she has made all of these choices, and she has likewise elected to work for voter enlistment, a choice that anticipates further obstruction all through the novel. At the point when Meridian enters school, she does so realizing that she will better herself. One of the first things the peruser notes is her determinism to give the wild youngster a possibility in the public eye, and afterward, after the wild kid's appalling and abrupt demise, give her a legitimate burial service. In the wake of being denied the open door by the specialists, the response from Meridian and different understudies was decimating. The understudies sang through tears that slipped like softening pellets of slush down their lamented and maddened cheeks: ?We will overcome...' (Walker, 48) Meridian becomes effectively engaged with the social liberties development, in spite of the fact that she should cover this from the college. She effectively urges others to join the development, also, they go from entryway to entryway attempting to persuade others to have the fearlessness to vote. Subsequent to turning out to be aquainted with Truman Held, Meridian before long experiences passionate feelings with him. This relationship closes disappointingly for Meridian, yet it gives another superb case of her ability. She can go on in spite of the misfortune of her kid, her darling, and her companion Anne-Marion, who was determined to persuading Meridian to be happy to murder for the transformation (Walker, 27). This is the point at which the peruser sees Meridian move into her next phase of life after defeating serious ailment at school. Meridian is distant from everyone else. Truman has hitched Lynne, a white lady, Anne-Marion has spurned her, and Meridian is simply starting to consider her perspectives and convictions from her point of view. She lives what's more, works in the South, however she is slight and frequently experiences loss of motion. Albeit battling with her own personality, she despite everything goes about as a hireling and a holy person among her kin. For instance, when individuals of color were not permitted to swim in the open pool, the civic chairman would not construct them one of their own. After a few youngsters suffocated in floods while swimming in trench that served as temporary pools, the city authorities were shown a thing or two by Meridian. It was Meridian who had driven them to the city hall leader's office, bearing in her arms the enlarged figure of a five-year-old kid who had been stuck in the sewer for two days before he was raked out with a catching snare. (Walker, 191) Meridian additionally goes about as a go between, amusingly, among Truman and his significant other Lynne. She remains companions with them two in spite of the agony that they once caused her. All through the novel, Meridian furnishes the peruser with instances of her protection from racial concealment and isolation and preference. The Constitution(Jefferson) vs The Communist Manifesto(Marx)

Thomas Jefferson was an individual from a pilgrim government during a period of unrest and warmed legislative issues. Karl Marx was a Prussian thinker and columnist with radical belief systems. In spite of the fact that living in various timeframes (Jefferson during the eighteenth Century, Marx during the nineteenth Century), the two essayists share something for all intents and purpose. Straightforwardly or by implication, Thomas Jefferson and Karl Marx both started a transformation by their compositions. Jefferson†s piece The Declaration of Independence announced the opportunity of the first Thirteen Colonies from England, which lead to the American Revolution. Vladimir Lenin grasped Marx†s work The Communist Manifesto and in the long run toppled the Russian government in the Russian Revolution. In spite of the fact that the settings of the works are extraordinary, the two authors stressed parallelism (Jefferson in paras. 5-29, Marx in paras. 24-30) to introduce their complaints in a compelling way. In The Declaration of Independence, Jefferson assaults King George III (by utilizing the verb modifier â€Å"He†) and his administration of the states. The agents of the provinces, including Jefferson, realized that with this archive they are demonstrating disobedience to England and have put their political professions just as the government assistance of the settlements in risk. In the years paving the way to this point, the British have removed the colonies† character, its privileges to administer the land and forced out of line tax assessment on the residents. Jefferson accepted that the break among England and the settlements was inescapable, and was legitimized by the biased strategies of British principle. In this way the American Revolution started. The Communist Manifesto is Marx†s endeavor to proliferate Communism as the ideal answer for pauperism. In contrast to Jefferson, Marx was not expounding on the imperfections in government; rather the Manifesto uncovered the blemishes in a Capitalist economy. Marx accepts that Capitalism is only a redesigned variant of a primitive society, with regular people put into two principle classes, the common (present day Capitalists) and the proletarians (wage workers). He characterizes the attributes of the middle class and attempts to clarify its issues. Marx additionally composed a 10-point Communist measure that would accommodate a perfect communist economy, just as reasons why communism is the idealistic culture countries ought to endeavor to turn into. Lenin abused Marxist beliefs to associate with the Russian residents, and persuaded a large portion of them that a communist society was superior to the Czar†s government. In this manner the Russian Revolution started. In spite of the fact that routed to various crowds, the compositions of Jefferson and Marx both focused on the correspondence of people and opportunity from the servitude of oppression. Jefferson utilized the Declaration of Independence to work up the pilgrims energetically against the British. Marx trusted that the Communist Manifesto would work up a more extensive crowd, for the most part the destitution stricken pay workers of Capitalist governments. Not until after his demise had this occurred, with Lenin in Russia in 1917. I accept that the works of the two creators were noteworthy in their time, however it was the Declaration of Independence that delivered a majority rule government, which has appeared to withstand the trial of time. With the breakdown of the Soviet Union and the melancholy states of the staying Communist countries on the planet, I think Marx†s lowly based monetary framework is unsatisfactory for this world. Despite the fact that Marx†s standards were sensible, I accept humankind will never accomplish a completely communist society due to man†s voracity and serious nature.

Procrastinators Unite Tomorrow!

1:23 A.M. I just checked the weather for Hawthorne and surrounding cities, the little chart shows lots of sunny days for the rest of the week. Maybe I will go back and check to see if Seattle has any electric storms, I heard they get them often. I am a college freshman, an HMSA alumni, an aviator-you would think that my 14-page English research paper, due later on today would be finished by now, it is not. I am procrastinating. Drinking from the forbidden waters, dark waters that poison the creative process. I have reorganized my bookshelf 14 times, Tried every pen in my pencil holder, checked every paper in my printer to make sure they are all white, I have counted the tiles in my room-144 if you count the ones that are cut in half, someone sucks at estimating. Earlier today I fed my dog 6 times, his belly will soon reach the floor, I wonder if male dogs can have puppies that one dude is pregnant- let me Google that- wait no, I must finish my paper. Why is it that we students love to wait until the last second to complete those big assignments? Every Semester on every class, Project due dates are dark circle days; we walk into class half asleep gripping that mocha latte for dear life. We hand in the packet, Project, or Disc and hope for the best counting the seconds until were back sound asleep on our beds. What is the purpose behind? Perhaps the unspoken student code to keep tradition alive by preventing the sand man from making his rounds, that evil little bastard he won’t get me, I am wearing my sunglasses-they make me invisible. Must reach for Red bull- sugar wearing out. If I can focus long enough to finish perhaps I will decipher what makes the last minute rush so satisfying. Sure I had the format months ago, and the sources were sitting in my desk for weeks collecting dust, I just love the thrill of beating the deadline. At what cost-I mean, if I didn’t finish it would be another thing, but as long as the assignment is complete by 8 am and I am in class at 8:02 things will be ok, right? Wrong! Perhaps my unhealthy relationship with procrastination will explain why last semester’s History paper came back with the word sleep circled in red 13 times in my paper, or why the background music in my PowerPoint for art history featured Flobots instead of Mozart’s 3rd symphony, that was actually a lucky mistake that A came in handy. The consequences will be there, and hopefully minus a few sleep depravation mistakes my work and that of other procrastinators will stay intact and continue to fuel that need for last minute creativity. I am not a morning person, therefore I will work during the night when no one is watching, there would be no problem, but the only problem is that when I Sit down in front of the screen everything else in front of me is way more interesting. I must now block facebook, TMZ, and that funny website with the videos of the hamster eating the lettuce, take off my cell phone battery, log out of AIM, turn off my email so that I won’t check if spam arrived every 2 minutes (I hate spam I read every sentence of it.) And finally after trying to procrastinate free my work environment, (yes Snickers you are sleeping outside, sorry buddy I don’t want to pet you to death) I will finally attempt to write my essay-wait, let me check the margins they look bigger than 1 inch, maybe change the header space it looks-what does this button do†¦

Should Samples Essay on Freedom of Speech Be Given Or Not?

Should Samples Essay on Freedom of Speech Be Given Or Not?The question 'should samples essays on freedom of speech' be given or not?' seems to be a rhetorical question. In the essay I'm writing, I don't intend to criticize anyone's views or actions. But it does seem like there's an endless stream of material online that focuses on the sole point of criticizing people for having different views. It's an easy and almost reflexive thing to do because that's the way the internet works and it is very easy to read hateful messages on the internet, even if you don't agree with them.I remember when I was growing up, most of the major news organizations tried to get their message across with articles and interviews about the evils of illegal drugs. This seemed logical at the time. And if you were a parent in the 1970s, you had no idea what drugs were. Then we learned about all of the new drugs out and how they were not as bad as we thought. The headlines changed and the drugs were called 'soft drugs.' Then, as we learned more, it wasn't as dangerous as we had thought. We still have the same problem with how people talk about different drugs today and how we write on the internet, but it's far more acceptable for drugs to be discussed. It may seem like I'm saying that 'freedom of speech' should be curtailed, but that's not what I'm saying. My issue is that there seems to be an endless stream of material out there, where there's a valid argument against anything. One thing I think it would be good to ask of an essay on freedom of speech is that you use good logic. It would be better to challenge the position you are taking than to just offer a counter argument to someone else's argument. To the extent that the writer doesn't do that, then it's just a slap in the face to the reader. Please consider all this. Make your decision, and thank you for reading my work.

The United States And Cuba - 1491 Words

Before the conflict between the United States and Cuba, the two countries were strongly connected in terms of trading, with the US purchasing 87% of Cuba’s exports (CITE). However, once Fidel Castro came to power in Janurary 1959 after successfully overpowering President Batista and established Cuba as a communist state, relations became strained. In the following year, $1.8 billion US assets in Cuba were taken by Castro and the newly Communist state created close ties with the Soviet Union (CITE 2). Traverse from the United States to Cuba was made illegal on February 8, 1963 and the Cuban Assets Control Regulations, or CACR, issued economic sanctions prohibiting financial transactions with Cuba in July of that same year (CITE 2). However, it is also important that the management and leaders should develop a platform where this vision is communicated to all the employees of the organization. 4: Given what you have read in the case study and your classmates responses to the questions, do you think you would like to work for Infosys? Why or why not? I think that Infosys is a great company and given a chance I would love to work with Infosys. I am always fascinated about the growth of Information Technology. Moreover, Infosys has been able to establish the good organizational values based on trust, respect, ethics and transparency. Case: Tel-Comm Tek Read:Tel-Comm-Tek,DRS, pp. 800-804. You are selecting the Managing Director (MD) for TCT. Question 1: Rank order the candidates from high to low. Which candidate would you recommend to the selection committee? Why did you select that person? The ranking from high to low can be discussed as: Rank 1: Brett Harrison Rank 2: Atasi Das Rank 3: Tom Wallace Rank 4: Jalan Bukit Seng Rank 5: Ravi Desai Rank 6: Saumitra Chakraborty All the six candidates have strengths and weaknesses. I think that Brett Harrison is the best alternative for TCT. He is an experienced candidate that comes with domestic and international experience (Sullivan, 2015). The good thing with Brett is that he has travelled few times to India and he is aware of the business factors in India. 2: What challenges might the person you recommend encounter if named MD? How can TCT minimize those challenges? One of the challenges that Brett Harrison can face if named MD would be the cultural challenge. The business environment in India is not stable and the business environment is influenced by number of political and legal factors. It might take some time for Brett to understand the business environment completely. One of the other risks or challenges could be the social risks (Dimitrijevic, 2012). There is always a possibility that the employees would not support the new leadership of Brett. TCT can minimize these challenges with effective governance and change management. It is important that the leadership team of TCT should communicate the reasons of picking Brett to all the stakeholders. 3: Based on information provided in Chap.16 dealing with a matrix organizational structure, would you recommend two individuals to the same post, i.e., one person directing internal affairs the other managing external affairs? What are the pros/cons of such an arrangement? The idea of matrix organizational structure is very effective. However, I would not recommend two individuals in this case. The pros and cons of this approach (two person for same post) can be discussed as: Pros of having two people for same post: It could help in effective management of the organization, as the work would be divided across different teams. It would also help TCT to appoint the best individuals that can manage the internal affairs and external affairs. For example, TCT can appoint the person that has best knowledge of internal affairs as the internal affairs head and the person that has best international experience as the external affairs head (Otrok, 2012). Cons of having two people for same post: It could result in job dilution and the dilution of responsibility. It is important that TCT should have executive that is responsible and accountable for all the internal and the external affairs of the company. The American Colonies Essays - Thirteen Colonies,

The American Colonies The New England and Southern Colonies were both settled largely by the English. By 1700, the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. The southern colonies have characteristics that are the antithesis of the New England colonies attributes. New England was colonized for Freedom of Worship and freedom of political thought. The Southern colonies were developed for freedom of economic opportunity. The New England colonies had aspirations for a distinct society, where they could show their homeland, how a country should be run. The southern colonies had goals for mercantilism, and increasing the prosperity of England. The New England colonies were based on theocracy, where the state forced the people to live and worship in an orthodox way. The southern colonies(Virginia) had a government based on a royal government, where the state was governed by a governor and council named by the king, and an elected assembly chosen by the people. Finally, the New England colonies wanted to establish the colony for religious motives, while the southern colonies were established for economic motives. England and the rebels of England (Pilgrims), made up the New England and southern colonies. "God Almighty in his most holy and wise providence hath so disposed of the condition of mankind, in all times some must be rich, some poor, some high and eminent in power and dignity, other mean and in subjection. Yet we must be knit together in this work as one man."(John Winthrop, A Model of Christian Charity) This statement by John Winthrop, demonstrates importance of religion in the lives of the New England settlers. "We must delight in each other, make others' conditions our own, rejoice together, mourn together, labor and suffer together, always having before our eyes our commission and community in the work, our community as members of the same body." (John Winthrop, A Model of Christian Charity). The use of the word "together" and "community" indicates that the New England settlers were of a communal nature, they were less individualistic than the southern colonies. The New England colonies were based on religious freedom, thus their society was reflected the religion. "These underwritten names are to be transported to Virginia, embarked in the Merchant's Hope, Hugh Weston, Master, per examination by the minister of Gravesend touching upon their conformity to the Church discipline of England, and have taken oaths of allegiance and supremacy:" (Ship's List of Emigrants Bound for Virginia). The use of the word "Master", shows, that the southern colonies were more of a individualistic state rather than a communal state(New England). This individualism was the effect of the motivation of the southern colonies for economic opportunity. "We whose names are underwritten, being by God's providnce engaged together to make a plantation...." (Articles of Agreement). The New England settlers, again were of a communal nature, in how they are binding together for the good of the community. "We intend by God's grace, as soon as we can with all convenient speed, to procure some Godly and faithful minster with whom we purpose to join in church covenant to walk in the ways of Christ."(Articles of Agreement). The statement above, shows how the minister, was the head of the theocracy, of the small communities. Furthermore, the "Articles of Agreement", demonstates the importance of sharing within the community. This article, was another product of the motivation of the New England settlers for religious freedom. "This court... in the interim recommends [that] all tradesmen and laborers consider the religious end of their callings...". The puritans believed everyone had a specific duty in life, something that one was proficient at. Almost all the mores and society itself radiated from religion, as a result, many people who couldn't endure the rigidity of such a society were exiled and the dissenters created new societies. "The worst[among us were the gold seekers who]with their golden promises made all men their slaves in hope of recompenses. There was no talk... but dig gold, wash gold, refine gold, load gold.." (Captain John Smith, History of Virginia). The southern colonists were a people who settled in the southern colonies for econmic motives. The people were more materialistic, and individualistic, thus greed prevailed. Conversely, the New England settlers were of a spiritual nature, and were dispassionate in materialistic matters. The drive of the southern colonists were toward economic prosperity. "For by our nearest computation we leave at our backs as many servants(besides Negroes) as there are friedman to defend the shores and all our frontiers [against] the Indians....[This] gives men fearful apprehensions of the danger they leave their estates and families in, while they are

Apartheid Era Pass Laws of South Africa

Apartheid Era Pass Laws of South Africa As a system, apartheid focused on separating South African Indian, Colored, and African citizens according to their race. This was done to promote the superiority of Whites and to establish the minority White regime. Legislative laws were passed to accomplish this, including the Land Act of 1913, the Mixed Marriages Act of 1949, and the Immorality Amendment Act of 1950- all of which were created to separate the races. Under apartheid, pass laws were designed to control the movement of Africans and they are considered one of the most grievous methods that the South African government used to support apartheid. The resulting legislation (specifically Abolition of Passes and Co-ordination of Documents Act No. 67 of 1952) introduced in South Africa required black Africans to carry identity documents in the form of a reference book when outside a set of reserves (later known as homelands or bantustans). Pass laws evolved from regulations that the Dutch and British enacted during the 18th and 19th-century slave economy of the Cape Colony. In the 19th century, new pass laws were enacted to ensure a steady supply of cheap African labor for the diamond and gold mines. In 1952, the government passed an even more stringent law that required all African men age of 16 and over to carry a reference book (replacing the previous passbook) which held their personal and employment information. (Attempts to force women to carry pass books in 1910, and again during the 1950s, caused strong protests.) Pass Book Contents The pass book was similar to a passport in that it contained details about the individual, including a photograph, fingerprint, address, the name of his employer, how long the person had been employed, and other identifying information. Employers often entered an evaluation of the pass holders behavior. As defined by law, an employer could only be a White person. The pass also documented when permission was requested to be in a certain region and for what purpose, and whether that request was denied or granted. Under law, any governmental employee could remove these entries, essentially removing permission to stay in the area. If a pass book didnt have a valid entry, officials could arrest its owner and put him in prison. Colloquially, passes were known as the dompas, which literally meant the dumb pass. These passes became the most hated and despicable symbols of apartheid. Violating Pass Laws Africans often violated the pass laws in order to find work and support their families and thus lived under constant threat of fines, harassment, and arrests. Protest against the suffocating laws drove the anti-apartheid struggle- including the Defiance Campaign in the early 50s and the huge womens protest in Pretoria in 1956. In 1960, Africans burned their passes at the police station in Sharpeville and 69 protesters were killed. During the 70s and 80s, many Africans who violated pass laws lost their citizenship and were deported to impoverished rural homelands. By the time the pass laws were repealed in 1986, 17 million people had been arrested.

Importance of Baseball to New York Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Importance of Baseball to New York - Essay Example The age when these teams existed and played is mostly referred as the Golden Age especially because the three different teams had their loyal fans that liked to watch them compete. However, this was only witnessed in New York and not the rest of the cities, which were characterized by decaying inner cities and aging ballparks. Other cities also lacked a competitive balance that was witnessed in New York (Wetherbee, n.d). The period after the war, however, brought with it some new changes that would change the New York baseball history. By this time, America was transitioning into a modern society and many teams had the chance to move to prosperous heights. Some teams moved to other areas and managed to gather fans. Some of them moved to Idaho while others moved to Milwaukee, Kansas City ad Baltimore among other major areas. This was to move to higher heights, which led to the two of the major leagues moving to California. The Dodgers and the Giants thought that California had better chances, which made them disappoint millions of fans in New York. With one move, the city was drained from its major league representation, which eventually led to the weakening of the championship baseball in this major city. Some of the major players in this period include Mickey Mantle, Jack Roosevelt Robinson and Branch Rickey. As mentioned earlier, baseball represents a huge part of America history. It provided Americans with a sense of togetherness and community, which was non-existent in the corporate world. It was also a source of pride and power for the Americans mostly because of the passion that came with sharing of the game’s experiences among Americans. By this time, the game was universal to all Americans and everyone seemed to know something about the game and the players. The three teams mentioned earlier owned the game (Barbieri, 2013). Before the 1950’s, baseball was part of middle class whites, which would later be challenged by baseball. Jackie

Reading Log and Case Study Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Reading Log and Case Study - Essay Example The most important resource available to organisations is human resource and their conducive functioning is ensured by a suitable organisational culture and climate. 2. Key insights (200 words) The state of the economy mandates that various organisations have to merge with each other in order to forge their survival. On the other hand, certain other organisations are trying to go for a change in their business operations through business process innovation. In order to support both kinds of activities, it is essential that organisations enhance their operating organisational culture and climate by innovating within its framework. The transition from one organisational cultural state to another cultural state is not only cumbersome but requires dedicated effort on multiple fronts. In order to make organisational culture and climate change a success it has to be adapted well to the existing organisational culture and organisational climate. This ensures that the transition between cult ural states is smooth and does not affect business operations negatively. In order to make the transition as smooth as possible, it is advisable to study the various involved sub-cultures within organisations in detail to identify possible transition problems. The resistance to change in organisational cultures is a present reality and needs to be dealt with on realistic footing. How can you key insights be applied in practice (200 words) In order to deal with organisation change on a stronger footing, it is necessary to implement organisational cultural change with greater understanding of the underlying sub cultures that would provide resistance to change. It is necessary to provide employees with means of feedback to gauge their assessment of the organisation’s culture and climate in order to develop new changes. Employee feedback could be received using questionnaires, surveys, one on one meeting by senior management and other similar methods. Once employee perception of existing organisational culture and climate is established, this baseline can then be used to plot a new direction for movement. During any major or minor organisational culture or climate change resistance will be encountered. The senior management of the business has to find avenues that will invite resistance from employees and then deal with these problems accordingly. For example, senior employees may show reluctance to upgrade their IT skills so the management would need to provide them with more intuitive and easy to use IT systems. These gaps and deficits must be assessed as realistically as possible and the use of external experts should not be ruled out. Case Study 1. How would you characterise current staff behaviour at the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Bank? The current staff behaviour at Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Bank is characterised by a twofold description – the older staff is sticking to its old working values while the new staff is trying to innovate and incre ase competitiveness. Overall staff behaviour characterises the struggle between the old guard and the new innovators. 2. Do you feel that their behaviour is attributable to the changes that have taken place, and why? The behaviour of the staff is purely an outcome of the structural change at the bank given the merger. Instead of the staff being at loggerheads because of differentiated cultures from two organisations, the staff is in a struggle because change is being imposed and resisted. Older members

What Caused Secession Essay Example for Free

What Caused Secession Essay With no doubt was the secession of the eleven southern states a very important event in our country’s history. Resulting in Civil War, which lasted four years, leaving over one-half million deaths, destruction, and great sectional hatred, has affected our country till today. The great question is what caused the southern states to secede? If slavery truly was the culprit behind this, if it was to what extent was it? Was the person leading our country at the time in fault for southern secession? If any what were other factors? All of these questions are still debated today. Southern believed that slaves were their property, and that they had the right to take them with them. So when they noticed that Lincoln was going to abolish slavery they decided it would be best to secede than not have anything to make money from. After the compromise of 1820 they limited slavery to the south, which would split the country into two for the next forty years. The South would feel that slavery was the best thing for the slave for it gave them something productive to do. The North however as a majority felt slavery as a horrible thing by the cruel ways the slave owners would treat and beat their slaves. There were also those who went and helped free and bring slaves up to the North and also into Canada. (Document 1). Lincoln promising to abolish slavery played a big role on secession. Southerners economy depended on agriculture, and cotton was one of their major crops. So they needed slaves to work in their fields. When they heard that Lincoln would abolish slavery they thought â€Å"If Lincoln were president†¦the Union would be endangered from that hour.† (Document 3). The South started to think that it is â€Å"Better leave the Union in the open face of day, than be lighted from it at midnight by the [arsonist’s] torch.† (Document 2) They also said that â€Å"All citizens of the United States have an equal right to settle with their property in the Territory, without their rights, either of person or property, being†¦impaired†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"It opened our eyes to the fact that there were two hostile elements in the country, and that if we allowed slaves to enter any territorial acquisition, our free labor must be excluded from it.† (Document 5) They argued about this for a reasonable time until the south eventually seceded from the south. We really don’t know what really caused secession. Even researchers can’t solidly say what the cause of secession was. But people can infer, and with clues, can have an idea of what caused secession.

Misunderstandings in Culturally Diverse Workplaces Essay -- social iss

This essay will explain issues that occur in culturally diverse workplaces and describe how personal conceptions may contribute to misunderstandings when working with others in culturally diverse workplaces. This essay will also discuss the impact of cultural differences when conflict occurs and it will give suggestions on how to resolve and manage this conflict. An explanation of who to discuss the conflict with in a work environment will also be discussed in this essay. The issues that arise in a culturally diverse workplace need to be known and identified by counsellors to ensure they are aware of any obstacle forming. Cross-cultural conflict can arise from a range of issues. These issues include language barriers, customs, roles and status, differences in non-verbal behaviour, personal space, appearance, gender, religion and responses to authority (Open Colleges, 2012, p.47-49). While working as a professional in a multi-cultural country it is important for counsellors to understand the influence these issues can have on relationships in the workplace with both clients and colleagues. Fontes states, when the client and counsellor come from different cultures, obtaining correct basic demographic information can be challenging due to atypical family configurations, facts that have been lost or changed in the process of immigration and lying (2008, p.282). These issues may be overcome with honesty and confidence once the counsellor and client have strong rapport. It is important for counsellors to understand their own cultural concepts and how they may contribute to conflict when working with others. As a young female, I understand that in many cultures I would be recognised as incompetent and unhelpful. However, by using le... ...of how to resolve it successfully. A reflection on my own cultural concepts has enabled me to understand how personal values and beliefs may contribute to misunderstandings when working with others and how the impact of cultural differences can affect conflict. It has also explained where to get assistance if needed if conflict arose. This information will be used in my work when counselling clients from a different cultural background. Dishonest salespeople and gossip Essay

No matter what culture one belongs, common observation shows that women â€Å"gossip† while men â€Å"talk shop†; women are â€Å"bossy† and men are â€Å"firm† (Women’s Language, 2005). However, even if common observation shows that women talk more than men, research findings prove otherwise. In fact, findings would even show that â€Å"men have been shown to talk more than women in settings as diverse as staff meetings, television panel discussions and husband-and-wife pairs in spontaneous conversation† (Women’s Language, 2005). As men tend to talk about â€Å"male things† like politics, sports, cars, women talk about the â€Å"women things† such as child-rearing, household chores and some personal relationships. According to Pamela Fishman’s research studies, women are relatively weak in interactive situations because they tend to â€Å"exploit questions and answers in order to force a response and keep the conversation going† (Women’s Language, 2005). Therefore, â€Å"gossiping† is common and universal. People always love to hear something about the other person who is not on the scene of conversation. What about dishonest salespeople? (rhetorical question) Are these people more disgusting than those who gossip? Looking at the gravity of damage which one causes more harm?   Looking at the gravity between the results, which causes greater damage? Looking at the gravity of the situation, it seems that gossiping is the most destructive trait here. (parallelism). But of course, people will not discount the fact that dishonesty in sales is also a bad trait. For one, not all incidents of dishonesty are detected and not all detected cases are reported. Therefore any fraud statistic is an estimate. Nevertheless, the statistics make it clear that dishonesty in salespeople occurs frequently, and no organization is immune (Peterson & Zikmund, 2004). The costs of fraud and dishonesty will continue to rise unless auditors, management, and the general public become more proactive in learning about the types of fraud, the perpetrators and valuable fraud prevention and detection techniques (Bezanis, 2002). It is important to be able to know the difference between the real and spurious products in order to maintain the good image of that company. Fraud is conventionally defined as â€Å"intentional deception, deceitful pretenses, or deliberate trickery to gain an advantage† (Hanlin, 2004). Fraud encompasses an array of irregularities and illegal acts characterized by intentional deception. Every fraud involves three elements: (1) theft act, (2) concealment, and (3) conversion (Albrecht & Albrecht, 2001). For instance, buyers who get the misfortune of buying fake Gucci bags are able to identify the fake product because of the flimsy hardware, cheap leather and misspelled logos. The fake bags are so like the originals that it is hard to spot them quickly. There are businessmen who are able to copy the smart way. High-end label bags cost around $500 to over $1,000. Anything less than these price ranges are fake. Buyers are also encouraged to read the fine print so that they do not buy those that says, â€Å"Designer Inspired.† The numerous issues which plague the business sector with allegations and prosecution of unethical conduct easily fall under either the definition of fraud or unfair and deceptive practices. Or if the issue does not fit with the two terms, it can fall under unethical business conduct. The unethical conduct is a catchall phrase that includes fraud and unfair practice and other aspects beyond the scope of the two terms. In the same manner, gossip is also an unethical business indulged by people regarding other people. However, gossip causes hurt. It can hurt people and damage lives. Thus, gossip, depending on the seriousness can be extremely dangerous too. It can damage a person’s reputation and image. In the long run, gossip seems to be more damaging than dishonest salespeople because one can always return a fake product. But the destruction one causes in gossip spreads like wildfire and cannot be restored. As defined, ethical business conduct is doing something that is not required by law, contract, or other obligation and which is a positive contribution to society. Therefore, a contrary conduct is unethical. This means doing something which is prohibited by law, contract, or other obligation or which has a negative contribution to society. Contribution to society is now part of the definition because ethical business conduct has evolved into what is termed as corporate and social responsibility. An act of the company has a vast effect on the society as a whole. In the course of human interactions, there are many situations in which it is difficult to make a decision because values come into conflict. It is essential that an individual or an organization engage in values clarification to develop a personal decision-making process that fosters ethical behavior.
